Where Should You Eat in Portillo?

Portillo is a ski resort high on the pass to Argentina, at 2,880 m on the shore of the deep blue Laguna del Inca. A single yellow hotel, open since 1949, holds most of the beds, and in 1966 the resort hosted the first Alpine World Ski Championships held in the southern hemisphere. In summer the lake, the Los Caracoles switchbacks and the Cristo Redentor statue at the border are the draw. Below are the restaurants, bars, and cafes we recommend in Portillo.

Frequently Asked Questions

We currently list one place to eat or drink in Portillo. Away from the city, eating out means lodge dining rooms, valley restaurants and vineyard kitchens rather than a street of bars, and menus lean towards long Chilean lunches: cazuela, parrilla and river trout. Options thin out sharply in the evening, so check what is open before you set off.

Chile eats late. Lunch is the main meal, usually between 1pm and 3pm, and it is when most places run a good-value fixed menu. Dinner rarely gets going before 8pm and busy nights fill from 9pm. Many kitchens in Portillo close on Sunday evenings and some take Monday off entirely.

For Friday and Saturday nights, yes, and most mid-range and upmarket restaurants take reservations by WhatsApp or Instagram rather than by phone. Picadas, market stalls and casual spots run on walk-ins only. The most celebrated kitchens in the city want a week or two of notice.

A set lunch menu across central Chile runs roughly 8,000 to 14,000 CLP. Dinner at a casual restaurant lands around 15,000 to 25,000 CLP a head before drinks, and upmarket dining considerably more. Prices in the Andes around Santiago sit at the higher or lower end of that depending on where exactly you are. Tipping is 10 percent and usually added to the bill.
