Where to Stay in Isla Negra
Hotels, apartments and hostels across Isla Negra, in the coast and countryside west of Santiago.
Where Should You Stay in Isla Negra?
Isla Negra is not an island but a stretch of rocky coast in El Quisco, where Pablo Neruda built the house he loved most and where he and Matilde Urrutia are buried above the sea. Around it runs a string of small beach towns, El Quisco, El Tabo and Algarrobo, full of cabins, seafood restaurants and craft fairs, on the shore Chileans call the Litoral de los Poetas. Below are the hotels, apartments and hostels we recommend in Isla Negra.
Frequently Asked Questions
We currently list 19 places to stay in Isla Negra. Rates in the coast and countryside west of Santiago follow the season more than the star rating: they peak in January and February and over long weekends, and fall sharply in winter. Guesthouses and small boutique hotels are often better value than the big seafront chains, and many cabins and apartments are priced for groups.
No. Foreign visitors paying in US dollars or with a foreign card are exempt from the 19 percent IVA on accommodation anywhere in Chile, including Isla Negra. Show your passport and the tourist card you were given on arrival at check-in, and ask for the exempt rate directly, because quoted prices sometimes include the tax.
You can, but it is a commute: one to two hours each way by bus or car, so days in the city get long. Staying in Isla Negra makes sense when the town or the coast is the point of the trip, with Santiago as its own stay at the start or end.
Book well ahead for January and February, for New Year's Eve, when the coast fills for the fireworks, and for the long weekends around Easter and Fiestas Patrias in September. Outside those dates, and especially midweek, Isla Negra has plenty of rooms and rates drop.
