Where Should You Stay in Sewell Mining Town?
Sewell is a company town built from 1905 on a steep Andean slope above Rancagua to house the workers of the El Teniente copper mine. There are no streets, only stairs and walkways between painted timber buildings that housed around 15,000 people at the town's peak. Families were moved down to the valley from the late 1960s, and UNESCO listed the town as a World Heritage site in 2006. Below are the hotels, apartments and hostels we recommend in Sewell Mining Town.

Lodges and cabins out in the Andes around Santiago are priced by season rather than by star rating, and rates climb steeply at peak times. Many include meals, because there is often nowhere else to eat nearby, so compare the full package rather than the room rate alone.
No. Foreign visitors paying in US dollars or with a foreign card are exempt from the 19 percent IVA on accommodation anywhere in Chile, including Sewell Mining Town. Show your passport and the tourist card you were given on arrival at check-in, and ask for the exempt rate directly, because quoted prices sometimes include the tax.
Not really. There is no Metro out here, and reaching Sewell Mining Town means a drive, a booked transfer or a tour, anywhere from under an hour to around three hours from central Santiago. Staying out here makes sense when the mountains or the vineyards are the point of the trip rather than the city.
As far ahead as you can for ski season between June and September, when the mountain lodges fill months in advance, and for the March and April grape harvest in the wine valleys.
