Things to Do in Isla Negra
Attractions, parks, and days out across Isla Negra, in the coast and countryside west of Santiago.
What Is There to Do in Isla Negra?
Isla Negra is not an island but a stretch of rocky coast in El Quisco, where Pablo Neruda built the house he loved most and where he and Matilde Urrutia are buried above the sea. Around it runs a string of small beach towns, El Quisco, El Tabo and Algarrobo, full of cabins, seafood restaurants and craft fairs, on the shore Chileans call the Litoral de los Poetas. Below are the attractions and activities we recommend in Isla Negra.

A village can be covered in a morning, but the larger towns in the coast and countryside west of Santiago reward a night or two at an easier pace.
Intercity buses leave from Santiago's terminals, mainly Terminal Alameda, Pajaritos and San Borja, and take roughly one to two hours depending on where you are going. Driving takes about as long on the toll highways west of the city. Tickets are sold at the terminal, and on summer and holiday weekends it is worth buying them a day ahead.
Once you arrive, mostly yes. The center of Isla Negra is best explored on foot, and local buses and colectivos cover anything further out. Streets can be steep and uneven in places, particularly on hillsides, so wear proper shoes.
January and February are peak season, when Chilean families head for the coast and the countryside and weekends get busy. Spring and autumn weekdays are the quietest and most comfortable time to visit. On the coast, morning cloud often burns off by midday, and the Pacific stays cold all year, even at the height of summer.
