The Santiago GuideThings to Do in Maipo Valley
Attractions, parks, and days out across Maipo Valley, in Wine Country.
What Is There to Do in Maipo Valley?
The Maipo Valley begins on Santiago's southern edge and is the historic heartland of Chilean Cabernet Sauvignon. Its warm days and cool mountain nights produce some of the country's most celebrated red wines, with famous estates a short drive from the city for tours and tastings. Below are the attractions and activities we recommend in Maipo Valley.
Frequently Asked Questions
We currently list 21 attractions and activities in Maipo Valley. Give it a full day at least. Maipo Valley is far enough from Santiago that a half day is mostly spent travelling, and the drive out through Wine Country is part of the appeal rather than something to hurry through.
Maipo Valley lies outside the city, so the Metro does not reach it. Most people drive, book a transfer or join a tour, and the journey runs roughly forty five minutes to two hours each way depending on the route and on the traffic leaving town. Check road conditions before setting out in winter.
It is the simplest way, though not the only one. The places on this page are spread out rather than clustered on a few streets, so getting between them on foot is not realistic. Organised tours and booked drivers cover the main stops, and they are the sensible choice if tastings are involved.
Start early. The roads out of Santiago clog on weekend mornings and mountain weather can turn by mid afternoon, so most people leave the city by eight or nine and are back before dark. Winter shortens the useful day considerably and can close the higher roads altogether.
