What Is There to Do in Portillo?

Portillo is a ski resort high on the pass to Argentina, at 2,880 m on the shore of the deep blue Laguna del Inca. A single yellow hotel, open since 1949, holds most of the beds, and in 1966 the resort hosted the first Alpine World Ski Championships held in the southern hemisphere. In summer the lake, the Los Caracoles switchbacks and the Cristo Redentor statue at the border are the draw. Below are the attractions and activities we recommend in Portillo.

Frequently Asked Questions

We currently list 5 attractions and activities in Portillo. Give it a full day at least. Portillo is far enough out of the city that a half day is mostly spent travelling, and the drive into the Andes around Santiago is part of the appeal rather than something to hurry through.

Portillo lies outside the city, so the Metro does not reach it. Most people drive, book a transfer or join a tour, and the journey runs from under an hour to around three hours each way depending on the route and on the traffic leaving town. A few places can only be visited on an organised tour. Check road conditions before setting out in winter.

Usually it is the simplest way, though not the only one. The places on this page are spread out rather than clustered on a few streets, so getting between them on foot is not realistic. Organised tours and booked drivers cover the main stops, and they are the sensible choice if tastings are involved or a site only admits guided groups.

Start early. The roads out of Santiago clog on weekend mornings and in the mountains the weather can turn by mid afternoon, so most people leave the city by eight or nine and are back before dark. Winter shortens the useful day considerably and can close the higher roads altogether.
