What Is There to Do in Sewell Mining Town?
Sewell is a company town built from 1905 on a steep Andean slope above Rancagua to house the workers of the El Teniente copper mine. There are no streets, only stairs and walkways between painted timber buildings that housed around 15,000 people at the town's peak. Families were moved down to the valley from the late 1960s, and UNESCO listed the town as a World Heritage site in 2006. Below are the attractions and activities we recommend in Sewell Mining Town.
Frequently Asked Questions
We currently list 2 attractions and activities in Sewell Mining Town. Give it a full day at least. Sewell Mining Town is far enough out of the city that a half day is mostly spent travelling, and the drive into the Andes around Santiago is part of the appeal rather than something to hurry through.
Sewell Mining Town lies outside the city, so the Metro does not reach it. Most people drive, book a transfer or join a tour, and the journey runs from under an hour to around three hours each way depending on the route and on the traffic leaving town. A few places can only be visited on an organised tour. Check road conditions before setting out in winter.
Usually it is the simplest way, though not the only one. The places on this page are spread out rather than clustered on a few streets, so getting between them on foot is not realistic. Organised tours and booked drivers cover the main stops, and they are the sensible choice if tastings are involved or a site only admits guided groups.
Start early. The roads out of Santiago clog on weekend mornings and in the mountains the weather can turn by mid afternoon, so most people leave the city by eight or nine and are back before dark. Winter shortens the useful day considerably and can close the higher roads altogether.
