What Is There to Do in Viña del Mar?
Viña del Mar is the polished seaside city next door to Valparaíso, known as the Ciudad Jardín for its parks and planted avenues. Long beaches run north to Reñaca, the Quinta Vergara park hosts the famous song festival each February, and the seafront mixes grand old palaces, the flower clock and Wulff Castle with high-rise hotels. A village can be covered in a morning, but the larger towns in the coast and countryside west of Santiago reward a night or two at an easier pace.
Intercity buses leave from Santiago's terminals, mainly Terminal Alameda, Pajaritos and San Borja, and take roughly one to two hours depending on where you are going. Driving takes about as long on the toll highways west of the city. Tickets are sold at the terminal, and on summer and holiday weekends it is worth buying them a day ahead.
Once you arrive, mostly yes. The center of Viña del Mar is best explored on foot, and local buses and colectivos cover anything further out. Streets can be steep and uneven in places, particularly on hillsides, so wear proper shoes.
January and February are peak season, when Chilean families head for the coast and the countryside and weekends get busy. Spring and autumn weekdays are the quietest and most comfortable time to visit. On the coast, morning cloud often burns off by midday, and the Pacific stays cold all year, even at the height of summer.
