What Can You Do Outdoors in Santiago?

Few capitals sit this close to the mountains. Walk the cerros inside the city, ride its long chain of parks, then head up into the Andes for hiking, biking, skiing, and hot springs.

Good to Know

What Should You Pack for a Day Outdoors?

Hiking & biking season
October to April, avoid peak summer midday heat
Ski season
June to September at the high-altitude resorts
Pack
Layers, sun protection, and water, even for short trips
Altitude tip
Foothill mornings run cold even when the city is hot

Season & gear

Conditions change fast with altitude, so layers matter even in summer, mornings in the Andes foothills can be cold no matter how hot Santiago gets by afternoon. Hiking and biking are best from October to April, while the ski season runs June to September at the high resorts. Sun protection is essential year round; the altitude and clear skies make sunburn quick even on cool days.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Cerro San Cristobal starts at the edge of Bellavista and climbs to the Virgin statue in about an hour. Cerro Manquehue in Vitacura is the harder city classic, roughly three hours return with genuine views over the whole basin. For anything bigger, Cajon del Maipo is ninety minutes southeast and puts you into real Andean terrain.

Better than most South American cities. The Mapocho 42 path follows the river the length of the city on protected lanes, and Parque Bicentenario and Parque Araucano are flat, car-free and easy with children. Coverage thins outside the central and eastern comunas, so check the route before committing to a long ride. Bike hire is straightforward in Providencia and Bellavista.

Spring, from September to November, and autumn, from March to May, give the most comfortable temperatures and the clearest air. Summer is hot in the valley but perfect at altitude in Cajon del Maipo. Winter brings snow to the Andes and a smog inversion to the city, so head uphill on those days rather than out on the flat.
