What to See and Do in Portillo

Chile's oldest ski resort, high on the road to Argentina

Portillo is the oldest ski resort in Chile and the most dramatic to reach, sitting at 2,880 m beside Laguna del Inca on the pass to Argentina. It runs on week-long stays at its single yellow hotel, but day tickets exist and the drive up the Los Caracoles switchbacks is an event in itself.

Before You Go

How do you get to Portillo from Santiago?

Travel time
About 2 hours 30 minutes each way
Distance
160 km north then east of Santiago on Ruta 60
Best season
Mid June to early October for skiing, with the best snow in July and August
How long to allow
Full day, 10 hours or more

Getting there

Drive Ruta 60 toward the Argentine border and climb the Los Caracoles switchbacks. Chains are often required in winter, so most day visitors take a ski transfer or tour rather than driving.

Frequently Asked Questions

Drive north then east on Ruta 60 toward the Argentine border, about 2.5 hours and 160 km, climbing the Los Caracoles switchbacks near the top. Most visitors go with a ski transfer or tour, since the route is exposed and can require chains.

Portillo is built around week-long stays at its yellow hotel, but day tickets are sold and the drive is comfortably doable in a day. If you only want one day on snow, El Colorado or Valle Nevado are closer and simpler.

The ski season runs roughly mid June to early October, with the most reliable snow in July and August. Outside the season the pass road stays open in good weather and Laguna del Inca is worth the drive on its own.
