Visiting tips

Most museums and galleries charge a modest entry fee, often free on Sundays or for students, and rarely require advance booking outside major touring exhibitions. Markets and historic buildings are usually free to wander, though some, like La Moneda, only open to the public on certain days. Many attractions close on Mondays, so it's worth checking hours before planning a full day around the historic center.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Museum of Memory and Human Rights is free, as is the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes on most days. Cerro Santa Lucia, Parque Forestal, Parque Bicentenario and Plaza de Armas cost nothing, and walking into Mercado Central or La Vega is free even if you do not eat. The Pre-Columbian Art Museum is free on the first Sunday of the month.

Most museums accept walk-ins, but Sky Costanera and the Cerro San Cristobal funicular are worth booking online for weekend visits, and the Teatro Municipal sells out weeks ahead. La Chascona, Pablo Neruda's Bellavista house, runs timed entry and fills up in summer. Everything else you can decide on the morning.

The Metro is fast, cheap and reaches almost everything: Line 1 runs the length of the city through the center, Providencia and Las Condes. Buy a Bip! card at any station. The historic center is compact enough to walk end to end in twenty minutes, and Uber, Cabify and DiDi fill the gaps for late nights or the hillside stops.

Monday is the standard closing day across the city, so plan markets, parks or the cerros for that day. Most museums open from 10am to 6pm Tuesday to Sunday, with last entry half an hour before closing. Hours shorten over Fiestas Patrias in mid September and between Christmas and New Year.
