Frequently Asked Questions
The essentials are Cerro San Cristobal and its funicular, the view from Sky Costanera, Plaza de Armas and the Metropolitan Cathedral, La Moneda palace, Mercado Central, and Cerro Santa Lucia. Most of the historic sights sit within a walkable few blocks.
Early morning, for two reasons: the Andes are sharpest before the afternoon haze settles over the valley, and the queues at Sky Costanera and the Cerro San Cristobal funicular are shortest before eleven. Museums are quietest on weekday mornings. Save Plaza de Armas and Mercado Central for the middle of the day, when both are at their busiest and most worth seeing.
The Pre-Columbian Art Museum is the one to pay for if you only pay for one, and Sky Costanera earns its ticket on a clear day. La Chascona and the other Neruda houses are worth it if the poet interests you at all. Cerro San Cristobal charges only for the funicular and cable car, and you can walk up instead.
