The Best Things to Do in Santiago

Santiago packs an extraordinary range of experiences into a single valley, from the hilltop viewpoints of Cerro San Cristobal and Cerro Santa Lucia to the museums of the historic center, the stalls of Mercado Central, and long afternoons in the cafes of Lastarria and Barrio Italia. There's always something new to discover, whether you're a first-time visitor or a longtime resident. Our guide pulls together the best of the city's landmarks, cultural attractions, and off-the-beaten-path gems worth seeking out.

Good to Know

What's the Best Way to Get Around When Sightseeing?

Getting around
Metro links most central sights; hilltop viewpoints need a funicular or short taxi
Best time of day
Mornings, for clear Andes views before the afternoon haze
Typical cost
Many parks, plazas and markets are free; museums charge a small fee
Good to pair with
A day trip to the coast or wine country if staying more than a few days

Getting oriented

Most of Santiago's landmarks cluster around the historic center and Providencia, an easy Metro ride or a long walk apart, while the hilltop viewpoints need a funicular, cable car, or short taxi to reach. Mornings tend to offer the clearest Andes views before the afternoon haze sets in, and many of the city's best sights, its parks, plazas, and markets, cost little or nothing to visit. If you're staying more than a few days, pair your sightseeing with a day trip to the coast or wine country to see a different side of the region.

Frequently Asked Questions

Santiago is most famous for its spectacular setting beneath the Andes, with snow-capped peaks visible from almost every street. It's also celebrated for the sweeping views from Cerro San Cristobal, the historic core around Plaza de Armas, the bohemian barrios of Lastarria and Bellavista, world-class wine from the surrounding valleys, and its role as the gateway to Valparaiso, the coast, and the mountains.

The city's highlights include riding the funicular up Cerro San Cristobal, wandering the streets and cafes of Lastarria, taking in the view from Sky Costanera, exploring the stalls of Mercado Central, visiting the museums around Plaza de Armas, and picnicking in Parque Bicentenario. Day trips to the Maipo and Casablanca wine valleys, Cajon del Maipo, and Valparaiso round out any visit.

Santiago is excellent for families. Parque Metropolitano, the huge park that includes Cerro San Cristobal, has a funicular, cable car, zoo, and swimming pools. Parque Bicentenario and Parque Araucano offer playgrounds and open space, museums like the interactive MIM science museum are made for kids, and in winter the Andes ski centers are an easy day out.

Santiago is one of the best-placed cities in the world for the outdoors: hiking and trail running on the cerros inside the city, cycling through its long chain of parks, rafting and horseback riding in Cajon del Maipo, and world-class skiing and snowboarding at Valle Nevado and the other Andes resorts from June to September. In summer the coast and wine valleys are barely an hour away.
